Spazju Kreattiv unveils its 2026-2027 season, bringing together visual arts, theatre, cinema and multidisciplinary projects while reaffirming its commitment to artistic experimentation, accessibility and the creation of original Maltese work. Words by Kylie Vella.
Following a landmark year celebrating 25 years of artistic excellence, Spazju Kreattiv begins its 2026-2027 programme in September with renewed confidence, presenting a season that embraces curiosity, experimentation and dialogue through an ambitious programme of visual arts, performing arts, cinema and multidisciplinary projects. As Malta’s National Centre for Creativity, the new season reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to supporting artists, commissioning original work and creating meaningful cultural experiences that connect audiences with contemporary ideas.
Across the coming year, visitors can expect a programme that brings together established artists, emerging practitioners and international collaborators, reflecting the richness and diversity of today’s creative landscape.
Rather than presenting artistic disciplines in isolation, the season encourages audiences to move between exhibitions, theatre productions, film screenings, festivals and public conversations, discovering how different art forms continually inform one another.
Visual arts remain at the heart of the programme, opening with Beyond the Visible: The Metaphysical Worlds of Olaug Vethal, a major exhibition celebrating one of Malta’s most respected artistic figures. Throughout the season, audiences will encounter exhibitions exploring technology and ecology, neurodiversity, collective memory, Carnival traditions, astronomy, beauty, education and international perspectives, demonstrating the breadth of contemporary artistic practice while encouraging reflection on the social issues shaping our lives today.

The performing arts programme reflects the same spirit of artistic diversity, bringing together original Maltese productions, international collaborations, festivals and returning audience favourites. At the heart of the season is The Cave of Wishes, Spazju Kreattiv’s Christmas Commission produced alongside Theatre Anon. Blending physical theatre, original music, inventive puppetry and striking visual storytelling, this festive production promises an enchanting experience for audiences of all ages while reaffirming the Centre’s commitment to commissioning new Maltese work. Alongside this flagship production, the programme features contemporary Maltese theatre, classic drama, musical theatre, artist residencies and festivals including Improvizza! Malta Improv Festival, Skeċċ, SongCraft and Dance Festival Malta, all of which continue to support artistic excellence, emerging talent and creative exchange.
As Malta’s only arthouse cinema, Spazju Kreattiv continues to play a distinctive role in the country’s cultural landscape. Its year-round programme brings together critically acclaimed independent and European cinema, alongside internationally renowned series including National Theatre Live, The Met: Live in HD, Exhibition on Screen and the EUNIC Film Festival. Together, these programmes offer audiences unparalleled access to world-class film, opera and theatre broadcasts, while reinforcing the Centre’s commitment to celebrating diverse cinematic storytelling.
Running throughout the programme is a strong commitment to accessibility, participation and collaboration. The season includes projects that celebrate neurodiversity, mixed-ability performance, children’s creativity, intercultural dialogue and artist development, alongside partnerships with local organisations and international cultural institutions. These collaborations strengthen Malta’s cultural ecosystem while creating opportunities for artists and audiences to engage with new perspectives and shared experiences.
Another defining feature of the programme is its continued investment in new work. Several productions and exhibitions have been commissioned or developed specifically for Spazju Kreattiv, reflecting the Centre’s ongoing commitment to supporting artistic research, experimentation and the creation of original Maltese cultural content. Rather than simply presenting completed work, the organisation continues to position itself as a place where new ideas are developed, tested and shared with the public.
The 2026-2027 programme ultimately presents more than a calendar of events. It reflects an evolving vision of culture as an open, inclusive and collaborative space where artistic practice becomes a catalyst for conversation, critical thinking and community engagement. Whether through contemporary visual art, innovative theatre, world-class cinema or multidisciplinary experiences, Spazju Kreattiv invites audiences to return throughout the year to discover new stories, encounter different perspectives and experience creativity in all its forms.
